Promoting Your Website |
|   |
Besides optimizing your website for search engines (SEO), there are many more things you can and should do to draw traffic. The most obvious things like advertising and PPC campaigns can be effective... but also expensive. Some of the lesser known techniques to market your website are writing articles, joining newsgroups and participating in the discussions and building links with websites in related industries.
Writing articles is one of the most cost effective ways to promote your website for 2 reasons. First of all, it establishes you as an expert in your given field. When people read your article (assuming it is well written) they come to know you on a more personal level and begin to trust you. While outright advertising is usually prohibited on the better known article directories, you will be allowed to link back to your website in the 'resource box' area of the article. This brings us to the second reason article writing can be such a boon to your traffic. That link will be picked up by the major search engines as a 'vote' for your website thus bringing you up in the results pages for the keywords you write about!
Joining and participating in newsgroups related to your website theme is good for the same reason. You should not try to blatantly advertise in these sites or your postings will be removed by the site moderator. On the other hand, a link back to your site in the signature area is totally acceptable. Just try to be helpful and informative in your postings and responses and you'll earn the trust of the other forum members as well as get some good links for SEO.
Links are a good thing no matter how you get em. Of course, some links are better than others. Try to exchange links with highly ranked sites that are related in some way to your industry for best results. Always avoid linking with 'link farms' or websites that sell links by the dozen. Search engines will see this as spamming and could possible penalize you for your efforts. |
